
Meet Dr. James "Mickey" Efird
Dr. James “Mickey” Efird is Professor Emeritus at Duke Divinity School, having taught thousands of seminarians Greek and Biblical studies. Most say Mickey is their favorite Bible teacher, combining the knowledge of a scholar with communications skills that make his teaching easy to understand.
Mickey received his A.B. degree from Davidson College and then earned his Masters of Divinity from Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. Mickey intended to become a pulpit minister but decided he needed further education. While working on his Ph. D. he began teaching as a graduate student at the Duke University Divinity School and soon discovered his true passion was teaching, joining the faculty full time in 1962.
Recognized as both an Old Testament and New Testament Scholar, Dr. Efird knows both Hebrew and Greek. Dr. Efird has authored 14 books and published more than 60 articles and papers, many of which can be found in the Harper-Collins One Volume Bible Dictionary. For more than 50 years he has served as an interim supply pastor for various churches.
Committed to making the Bible understandable and properly understood Mickey is best known for the wonderful Bible Studies he teaches in churches of many denominations. Laypersons and Clergy alike love the obvious passion he has for the Bible, the way he interacts with his audience and his rare gift of explaining the Bible to them so they can understand how the ancients understood the scriptures as well as how we can apply the texts to life today.
